A manhunt is underway for 25-year-old Cristian Vasquez Alvarenga, who allegedly abducted an acquaintance and stole the victim’s vehicle on Saturday night, then led law enforcement on a high-speed pursuit across Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Maryland before abandoning the car.

Herndon police responded to the domestic altercation on Knight Lane, and Fairfax County officers and U.S. Park Police joined the chase, which ended in Maryland.

The games featured five sports: track and field, swimming, softball, tennis, and bowling. By the time competition wrapped, over 1,700 medals had been distributed—including more than 900 golds, 500 silvers, and 300 bronzes.

Friday evening’s opening ceremony at Robins Stadium featured Richmond’s own Elliott Yamin, an American Idol finalist, performing the National Anthem. Athlete Tyler Bernreuther lit the cauldron, and Hannah Ellenbecker, who delivered the athlete address, was named the 2026 Athlete of the Year.

The weekend also included a Healthy Athletes program offering free vision, dental, and general health screenings.

The Blue Ridge Parkway and Shenandoah National Park enter full summer season, with wildflowers at elevation, clear driving views, and ranger programs running across the Commonwealth’s most scenic high country.

The Blue Ridge Parkway threads approximately 220 miles through Virginia at no charge. Recommended summer stops include Humpback Rocks near Waynesboro, Peaks of Otter near Bedford, and Mabry Mill near Meadows of Dan.

Shenandoah National Park’s 105-mile Skyline Drive offers ranger-led programs, campfire talks, and junior ranger programs from Dickey Ridge Visitor Center in the north to Loft Mountain campground in the south all season.

Shenandoah charges a $30 vehicle fee, and America the Beautiful passes are accepted at both entrances.
