Answer: Virginia has had three capitals since English settlers first organized the colony’s government. Jamestown served as the first capital until 1699, when the House of Burgesses voted to relocate it to Williamsburg. Then in 1779, at Gov. Thomas Jefferson’s suggestion, the General Assembly moved the capital again—this time to Richmond.
