Article Icon 1Dangerous Heat Grips Virginia for Fourth of July

Virginia is experiencing dangerous heat this Fourth of July weekend, with temperatures in the upper 90s and low 100s combining with high humidity to push heat index values as high as 115 degrees in some parts of the state.

Gov. Abigail Spanberger is urging residents to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, never leave children or pets in vehicles, and check on elderly neighbors and others who may be vulnerable to the extreme heat.

The prolonged heat wave comes as much of Virginia continues to face worsening drought conditions, prompting voluntary water conservation measures in parts of Central Virginia and raising concerns about wildfire risk, agriculture, and declining river levels.

Article Icon 1Virginia Beach Welcomes Fourth of July Crowds

Virginia Beach is celebrating Independence Day with packed hotels, as most of the city’s more than 13,000 hotel rooms are sold out or nearly sold out for one of the busiest tourism weekends of the year.

Visitors are expected to fill the Oceanfront for the city’s annual Fourth of July festivities, including fireworks displays over the Atlantic Ocean at 24th Street and at Mount Trashmore, with heavy traffic and large crowds anticipated throughout the day.

Tourism leaders say the strong holiday turnout highlights the importance of the city’s $4 billion visitor economy and expect the Fourth of July weekend to rank among Virginia Beach’s highest hotel occupancy periods of the year.
