Article Icon 1‘No Kings’ Protests Held in Virginia

Large and small protests against the Trump administration were held across Virginia Saturday to coincide with the parade for the Army’s 250th birthday in Washington, D.C. The most prominent gatherings shared the banner of the “No Kings” movement.

Hundreds of people attended rallies in Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Williamsburg, and Chesapeake in the Hampton Roads area. No incidents required law enforcement intervention.

Gov. Glenn Youngkin had mobilized the National Guard and said he would position members at potential protest sites statewide. However, no soldiers were in sight at the rally in Richmond, which drew thousands of peaceful protesters to the lawn outside the state capital.

The sole reported incident of violence happened in Culpeper when a 21-year-old man drove his car into a group of protesters, striking at least one person. Joseph R. Checklick Jr. was jailed for reckless driving and may face more charges.

Article Icon 1New Old Names for Bases

Three Army bases in Virginia were renamed last week. Under President Trump’s orders, Fort Barfoot became Fort Pickett, Fort Walker became Fort A.P. Hill, and Fort Gregg-Adams became Fort Lee.

In each case, the renaming restores the name of a Confederate general to the facility, which had been removed in 2023 at an estimated cost of $39 million.

However, because federal law bans naming bases for Confederate leaders, the official new names honor other service members with the same names. For example, instead of Gen. Ambrose Powell Hill, Fort A.P. Hill is now named for Bruce Anderson, Robert Alexander Pinn, and Edward Hill.

The Army said it named the bases in honor of heroic soldiers who served in conflicts ranging from the Civil War to the Battle of Mogadishu.

Article Icon 1Students Sue Principal

Family members of three students at a Virginia Beach high school sued the principal, claiming that he “published materially false and defamatory statements in an email addressed to the entire student body.

The Kellam High School students allegedly gave a fellow student a gag birthday card and a bag of fried chicken. In the email, school principal Ryan Schubart called the incident “racist harassment.”

The lawsuit disagrees, indicating that the gift was well received, with “Plaintiffs, the gift recipient, and other students laughing, hugging, and engaging in friendly behavior.

The lawsuit seeks $10 million in damages.
