Eli Lilly broke ground Thursday on its $5 billion manufacturing facility at West Creek Business Park in Goochland County, more than a year after announcing the project.

The roughly 1-million-square-foot plant will produce targeted cancer treatments called antibody-drug conjugates, along with active ingredients and finished medicines. Lilly expects about 650 permanent jobs and 1,800 construction jobs.

Lilly selected Goochland from more than 400 proposals across 46 states and bought the 227-acre site for about $38.4 million. It also committed $40 million to workforce training, including a Goochland training center targeted to open in 2028.
