Article Icon 1Commanders Seek a D.C. Address

The Washington Commanders announced a deal with Mayor Muriel Bowser to build a new facility on the site of RFK Stadium in the District of Columbia. Under the proposal, the team would invest $2.7 billion, and the city would contribute another $1.1 billion.

The proposed stadium would seat 65,000 for football and would have a roof so it can be used year-round. It would be the most substantial private investment in D.C. history.

Council Chairman Phil Mendelson expressed doubts about the plan’s expense. At least seven of the 13 council members must agree to the deal.

The mayor expects that residential development at the site could add as many as 6,000 new housing units, allowing the full project to eventually generate $4 billion in annual new tax revenue.

Article Icon 1ICE Wants to Prosecute Bystanders

The U.S. Attorney’s Office said it intends to prosecute two people who attempted to intervene when ICE agents detained Teodoro Dominguez-Rodriguez inside the Albemarle County courthouse last week.

ICE stands behind the actions of the law enforcement officers, who are trained to assess and prosecute apprehensions in a manner that best ensures operational success and public safety,” an unnamed spokesperson for the agency said.

The federal officers who carried out the arrest were not wearing uniforms, did not show the suspect identification, and did not present an arrest warrant to the suspect or his lawyer. One agent had his face covered during the arrest, which is not allowed under state law.

Albemarle County Sheriff Chan Bryant said the ICE agents did present paperwork when they entered the facility. However, Commonwealth’s Attorney Jim Hingley promised to investigate and warned that arrests made inside courthouses could be dangerous to bystanders.

Construction kicked off on the New River Valley Rail Project, including a groundbreaking for the new station in Christiansburg that is scheduled to open in 2027.

When completed, the project will extend passenger rail service from Roanoke to Christiansburg along the existing tracks of Norfolk Southern’s main line.

The project is expected to cost $265.4 million, far less than the $1 billion that had been estimated for an earlier design that would have used different tracks.

The railroad will be built and maintained by the New River Valley Station Authority.
