Article Icon 1FBI Fires Richmond Analysts over Memo

Five FBI analysts at the Richmond field office were fired over their role in a 2023 memo warning of a potential threat from Catholic “violent extremists”—a document that has divided the bureau ever since it leaked.

Director Kash Patel ordered the dismissals after an internal review determined the 11-page memo violated agency standards. It alleged potential links between radical-traditionalist Catholic ideology and violent extremism—drawing accusations of religious bias from Republicans on Capitol Hill.

Earlier Justice Department investigations found the memo violated analytical tradecraft but did not establish intentional misconduct. The firings, which the analysts’ lawyer calls politically motivated, mark the latest wave of terminations under Patel’s leadership.

Two recent tragedies involving U.S. Navy sailors have spotlighted concerns over personnel safety and discipline in the Hampton Roads region.

In Norfolk, sailor Jermiah Copeland pleaded guilty to the unpremeditated murder of fellow sailor Angelina Resendiz, admitting he strangled her to death in his barracks in May 2025. Copeland also pleaded guilty to charges of aggravated assault by strangulation and will serve at least 40 years in prison.

Separately, in Newport News, Boatswain’s Mate Seaman Jesse Braswell was shot and killed aboard the future USS John F. Kennedy at Newport News Shipbuilding. Another sailor has been placed in pretrial confinement as the Naval Criminal Investigative Service continues its probe into the Saturday morning incident.

Records show Braswell joined the Navy in October 2024 after living in Colorado and was assigned to the ship after finishing boot camp and surface warfare engineering school.

Article Icon 1Judge Weighs Confederate School Names Dispute

U.S. District Court Judge Michael F. Urbanski is deliberating the future of Confederate-linked names at Shenandoah County public schools following a high-profile lawsuit.

The Shenandoah County School Board voted in May 2024 to restore names honoring generals like Stonewall Jackson and Turner Ashby, reversing changes made following the death of George Floyd.

The Virginia NAACP and affected students argue the decision fosters a discriminatory environment that undermines educational equity for black students. Plaintiffs claim the names violate students’ First Amendment rights by compelling endorsement of a viewpoint tied to racial exclusion and slavery, while also breaching the Fourteenth Amendment, Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the Equal Educational Opportunities Act.

School board defenders stress local heritage, community support, and the absence of proven academic harm to any students. The ruling could set significant precedents for school naming policies nationwide.
