Article Icon 1Former NICU Nurse Faces New Charges

A former nurse in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital has been indicted by a grand jury on two counts of malicious wounding and four counts of child abuse.

The 26-year-old nurse, Erin Elizabeth Ann Strotman, was already facing two charges of malicious wounding and felony child abuse, bringing the total to eight charges. All the injuries in those cases occurred last year.

More charges may be filed. Authorities are investigating injuries sustained by seven infants during Strotman’s employment at the hospital: three cases in 2024 and four in 2023.

Strotman remains free on bond as the legal proceedings continue. She is scheduled to appear in court on March 20.

Article Icon 1More School Bus Cams Arriving

Virginia law imposes a $250 fine for drivers who pass a school bus when it is loading or unloading children. Now, many buses across the Commonwealth are being equipped with cameras to capture images of cars that don’t stop.

Virginia Beach City Public Schools recently installed cameras on the stop arms of 150 school buses. They say the cameras will snap photos of violators and pass them on to local police.

Fairfax County is installing 50 such cameras and will begin handing out fines to violators after a brief grace period. “The goal is to change driver behavior and prevent the dangerous act of passing a stopped school bus with its red lights flashing while children are loading or unloading,” said Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Jeff McKay.

Other counties and cities have already implemented the system, and some drivers have complained that the technology has been misused.

Article Icon 1Watch Out for Wildfires

The National Weather Service warned residents in Southwest and Central Virginia to be aware of an elevated risk of wildfires for the rest of the week.

Dry spring weather in recent days and breezy conditions in the forecast could cause a blaze to quickly get out of control.

State law “bans open-air burning prior to 4 p.m. if the fire is within 300 feet of the woods or dry grass which could carry fire to the woods” to help prevent wildfires.

In Southwest Virginia, the NWS forecast said that “elevated fire weather concerns are expected Wednesday due to low afternoon relative humidity and slightly breezy winds, with strong winds expected across the mountains late Friday through Saturday night.”
