HUD Approves Disaster Relief

The federal Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced that it will provide disaster assistance to residents of Southwest Virginia who suffered damage in February’s winter storms.

Heavy rain from Feb. 10 to18 overwhelmed streams and triggered flooding that swept away homes and forced rescue crews to pluck dozens of people from danger.

HUD said it will provide several forms of assistance, including a 90-day moratorium on mortgage foreclosures, loans to help people refinance or repair homes, and the sharing of information about available housing.

The announcement comes a month after President Trump approved a major disaster declaration for the region.

School Bus Hits House

A school bus carrying four children and its driver crashed into a house in Hopewell on Monday morning just after 8 a.m.

The bus struck a mailbox and a tree before hitting the house. Two children and the driver were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. No one was inside the home.

“It appears that the weather may have played a factor, but the accident is still under investigation,” a Hopewell Schools spokesperson said. No charges have been filed.

Virginia No. 5 in Hospital Safety

According to a survey from the Leapfrog Group, the Commonwealth ranked fifth among American states for hospital safety last year. This is the seventh consecutive year the state has earned a top five ranking.

Almost half—47.1%—of Virginia’s hospitals earned an “A” grade in the ranking.

The Leapfrog Group compiled its rankings by measuring how well hospitals protect patients from errors, injuries, accidents, and infections.

No hospitals in Virginia were given “D” or “F” grades.
