Article Icon 1State to Ban Male Athletes in Women’s Sports

The Virginia State Board of Health voted without dissent to write new regulations that would prevent athletes born as biological males from taking part in women’s sports.

Three current and former college swimmers from Roanoke College and Virginia Tech filed a petition, writing that they had been directly harmed by males competing in college sports.

We want to continue to garner support and protect women in their private spaces, and support fair competition,” swimmer Carter Satterfield said.

The Virginia Department of Health will draft a regulation, which must then be approved by the board, a process that could take years.

Red flags will remain in place at Virginia’s beaches for the next few days as Hurricane Erin passes by in the Atlantic Ocean, bringing winds and potentially dangerous waves to Hampton Roads.

When it gets here, it’s going to be so big and so rough and so dangerous, nobody should be in the water during this,” Tom Gill of the Virginia Beach Lifesaving Service said. “We’re going to do everything we can to keep people out of the water.”

Despite the warnings, some were deliberately braving the waves. “We pretty much live for this,” a skimboarder said as Erin approached.

Because the storm is forecast to remain well out at sea, interior areas of Virginia aren’t expected to be affected.

Arlington police charged 27-year-old Logan Chrisinger with first-degree murder after he allegedly killed his mother, 57-year-old Travis Renee Baldwin of Winchester.

Officers responded to a 911 call on Sunday morning and found Baldwin suffering from a gunshot wound. They attempted first aid, but she later died at a hospital.

Chrisinger remained on site at the crime scene during the police activity, where he was detained.
