Article Icon 1Virginia Rescuers Head to Venezuela

A Fairfax County-based urban search and rescue team of nearly 80 personnel and six dogs deployed Friday to Venezuela after twin earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude struck near Caracas, with at least 920 people killed and over 3,300 injured in what officials called the country’s deadliest earthquake disaster in over a century.

Virginia Task Force 1 departed with 70,000 pounds of heavy rescue equipment after the State Department confirmed the damaged Caracas airport could receive them; Secretary of State Marco Rubio named the team among the first American units sent to the disaster zone. Virginia-based Operation Blessing and Mercy Chefs also dispatched feeding teams to the region.

The death toll was still climbing as of Friday, with thousands reported injured and many more missing amid widespread building collapses across the capital.

A Silver Spring man was convicted of first-degree murder on June 18 for his role in the execution-style shooting of 20-year-old Edvin Agustin Leon in a Montgomery County park, in a retrial after his first trial ended in a hung jury.

Sender Emanuel Godoy-Lemus, 22, was found guilty after a three-week trial and nearly three days of jury deliberation, and now faces multiple life sentences; a sentencing date hasn’t been set. A co-defendant was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences the day before the verdict.

Investigators determined the attack was directed by higher-ranking MS-13 members who provided weapons to lower-ranking members and ordered the killings; a second victim survived by playing dead and crawling nearly a quarter-mile through the park before flagging help.

Article Icon 1Budget Clock Ticking as Spanberger Sends Amendments

Gov. Abigail Spanberger sent Virginia’s newly passed $205 billion biennial budget back to lawmakers Friday with 14 proposed amendments, setting up a race against the July 1 deadline that, if missed, would trigger the state’s first-ever government shutdown.

The budget, passed June 22 after months of gridlock over how to tax the state’s booming data center industry, includes raises for teachers and public employees, new housing investments, and a temporary electricity consumption tax on data centers projected to generate $1.2 billion over the two-year cycle. Spanberger’s amendments include technical clarifications and additions such as cancer screenings for firefighters and higher pay for home care workers.

Lawmakers must reconvene to consider and adopt the amendments before July 1; the governor’s office said many of the proposed changes were requested by legislators themselves

Science & Technology

Dear Flyover Reader,

If you chose not to invest in The Flyover’s fundraising campaign but still want to support us, this one’s for you.

The Flyover will always be free. Producing it isn’t.

So, two honest questions:

Do you rely on us for news without the spin? Is fact-first journalism worth fighting for?

If your answer is yes, hear me out.

Behind every morning email is a team of real people working to bring you the news clearly and fairly, without an agenda pulling the coverage one way or the other. We don’t answer to advertisers or a corporate parent, we answer to you.

So today, we’re asking: if The Flyover has earned a place in your morning, will you chip in to help keep it going strong?

Maybe you’re wondering whether $10 really makes a difference. It does. But here’s the thing—it makes a huge difference when a thousand of you decide to chip in together.

We’ve seen it work. When we opened The Flyover up to investment, thousands of readers stepped in—not billionaires, not a corporation with an angle, just people who read this every morning. That’s how we stay independent: lots of readers, each doing a little, adding up to something no single backer could buy.

This is a simple, powerful way to support true, independent journalism.

So, will you be one of the thousand? Even $10 says you believe in what we’re building. $50 or $100 helps us grow, launch new editions, and deliver more of the news America is hungry for.

Donations from readers are an important revenue source for The Flyover, and I hope you will help if you can.

Thanks for reading—every morning, and today.
